Gail Greatorex runs her own consumer product safety advisory, training and advocacy business, ‘Product Safety Solutions’, in Melbourne. Gail worked for many years the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and has spent more than 30 years in product safety.

Gail will provide an outline of Australia’s consumer product safety system, some of the key principles and challenges, and look at a range of examples from bunk beds to button batteries.

Session 2: Sarah Furman, Associate Director- Advanced Materials, AECOM

Corrosion and Fatigue Failure investigations.

Sarah is a materials and corrosion specialist with a broad knowledge of the properties and typical deterioration mechanisms of many metallic and non-metallic materials. She is an Associate Director in the Advanced Materials team at AECOM where she provides corrosion and materials engineering advice. During her 25 year career she has undertaken failure analysis investigations on a wide variety of different types of assets including; water pumps, wind turbines, mineral processing tanks, fire water mains, water pipes, escalators and other assets.

Sarah will present two unrelated investigations into pump failures, one involving a copper element from a vertical high lift turbine pump and one involving the failure of a stainless steel component on a high capacity centrifugal pump. The presentation will discuss the approach taken to identify the most likely cause of failure from a materials perspective.
