SPEAKER ONE: Dr Caprani speaking about  CROSS-AUS (Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety - Australasia)

Synopsis: CROSS-AUS will be introduced and the way it works will be explained. The effectiveness of the scheme in the UK will be explained.  In the light of the Genoa bridge collapse, some issues related to bridge management in Australia will also be discussed, including the possibility of a publicly accessible database. 

Bio: Dr Caprani is a Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Monash University. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer and Fellow of Engineers Australia (CPEng FIEAust) and Chartered Structural Engineer (CEng MIEI, MIStructE) with considerable industrial and academic experience. To date he has authored over 150 scientific publications in a variety of topics related to structural safety and bridge engineering.

SPEAKER TWO: Rod Wilkie (founder of Melbourne Testing Services)

Synopsis: Metallurgical failures caused by residual stress and fatigue can have catastrophic consequences for dynamically loaded structures. The cause of these failures may be precipitated by various events. Discussion on the root cause of metallurgical failures will be provide with some pictorial examples and explanations for the analytical process adopted to investigate the cause failures.

Bio: Rod Wilkie is the director of Melbourne Testing Services (MTS) a NATA accredited testing laboratory. He is a qualified Welding Supervisor/ Inspector/ Metallurgist and has a diploma in Civil Engineering, with 30 plus years of experience at BHP and MTS in the fields of load and stress testing of materials, components and structures.
